semiotics

Chandler, Daniel (2002) Semiotics: The Basics.

Chapter 4- challenging the literal.

In this chapter, Chandler discusses how semiotics challenge the literal by showing that there are many ways to represent the way things are. A word may be taken literally or it may understood through feelings or ideas evoked from the word. Chandler writes about Tropes, figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression. Metonymy(saying track, instead of dog race) and synecdoche(saying Ringling, instead of ringling college of art and design) are discussed in relation to tropes that are commonly used.

Can you escape the use of metaphor?

Why would you want to escape the use of metaphor?
